Netflix has entered an agreement to purchase Warner Bros. for $82.7 billion. The merger is not expected to go into effect until Q3 2026, after Discovery Global separates from Warner Bros. Under this agreement, Netflix will acquire the rights to the entire film and television catalog, including Harry Potter. In the statement released by Netflix, Warner Bros. will continue with their current operations, meaning there should be no changes to the HBO Harry Potter series at this time.

Though Netflix’s bid did win the agreement, this deal is not going through without a fight. Paramount, another company bidding on Warner Bros. Discovery, intends to raise its bid above the company’s leadership. Paramount argues that intentional interference took place during a meeting in Brussels and that there was bias against Paramount during the bidding. Due to the perceived unfair transaction between Netflix and Warner Bros., Paramount intends to bring its bidding argument directly to Warner Bros. stockholders. Should stockholders favor Paramount, the deal with Netflix may be halted.
